Sixteen per cent of the people living in Hastings, East Sussex, are separated or divorced, according to recently released census figures – more than any other town in the UK.
Second on the list is Worthing in neighbouring West Sussex – 14 per cent of this quiet seaside town’s residents are separated or divorced.
According to a report in the Worthing Herald, eight out of the ten towns with the highest numbers of divorced and separated parents are coastal towns like Worthing or Hastings. The Census information also reveals that these areas also have a lower average monthly rent – £400 compared to £600.
Local MP Peter Bottomley told the Herald:
“No-one is happy about divorce within a community, but there should not be criticism of those who feel that is the least worst option for them. I think one of the reasons which has made Worthing an attractive place for many people, from families to those who are separated or divorced is the fact there are a high number of groups and organisations here that offer support and friendship. It’s also an area that has been more affordable than many other places within the country.”
