Abuse victim wins large settlement from Birmingham Council

1 min read

A 35 year-old woman has won a five figure settlement from the  local authority which placed her back into the care of her abusive mother during her childhood.

Collette Elliot sued Birmingham City Council for damages, claiming for loss of earnings, pain and suffering, and the costs of her continuing psychotherapy, Family Law Week reports.

The council reportedly received numerous warnings from teachers, neighbours and health visitors that Elliot was at risk of emotional and physical abuse, but despite a brief period in foster care, she was returned to her mother. She left home at age 18.

She hopes Birmingham City Council will now issue a formal apology.

She said:

“Whilst the settlement from the council is a step forward, I won’t have any sort of closure until the council apologies for repeatedly letting me down and failing to protect me. Nothing will make up for what I was forced to endure but an apology would reassure me that lessons have been learnt by the council to prevent any other children suffering like I did.”
