New wife divorces husband for wedding debt

1 min read

A woman in Saudi Arabia divorced her husband after discovering that he had run up large debts to pay for their wedding.

The unnamed woman said her husband had been “tense” and unable to look after her properly as various banks pressured him to repay his loans.

He had taken out a loan of 150,000 Saudi riyals (£27,063) to fund an extravagant wedding, Arab News reports, also borrowing to buy a house and car.

His wife reported:

“A short while after we got married, he took another loan in order to start a new business. All of these loans eventually amounted to a massive debt, which he was unable to pay.”

When her husband started to blame his new wife for his financial troubles, saying she had brought him bad luck, she divorced him, declaring:

“It’s true that every girl dreams of a lavish wedding, but they never impose or force their desires on men.”

Speaking to Arab News, “wedding expert” Saira Ali pointed to the potential expense of traditional weddings in the Middle Eastern nation, which typically include a mahr (marriage payment) given by the bridegroom to his bride, along with jewellery and a celebration. Grooms should be careful to avoid debts, Ali declared, insisting that impressive weddings were still possible on limited budgets.
