Adoption board ‘should focus on all children in care’

1 min read

The National Adoption Leadership Board should expand its remit following the recent resignation of chair Sir Martin Narey.

Established last year, the National Adoption Leadership Board was set up to increase adoption rates across the country, advise the government and monitor progress across the sector. But former civil servant Sir Martin announced his resignation via social media at the end of last week. He will leave the board next March.

Now the Chief Executive of charity the Adolescent and Children’s Trust (Tact) has called on the government to extend the board’s responsibilities beyond adoption. Andy Elvin declared:

“The landscape has changed and now is an ideal opportunity for the DfE to rework the board … and broaden its outlook to ensure all children in the care system are focused on, rather than just the five per cent waiting for adoption. Just focusing on adoption alone is not good enough. Now Martin Narey is going, it’s a good time to do it. He’s done a good job, but it’s time to rethink the approach.”
