The registration fee for establishing a lasting power of attorney will fall on April 1 2017, from £110 to £82.
Lasting powers of attorney (LPAs) are established when someone believes they may lose ‘capacity’ – the ability to make decisions about their best interests due to an illness such as dementia. Sometimes they are set up when this process has already begun. They provide the personal attorney with the power to manage such matters as an individual’s finances or their personal welfare.
Fees for repeat applications will also fall – from £55 to £44.
The Office of the Public Guardian, which administers LPAs, said the price reflected an rise in the overall volume of applications, meaning that income from fees now exceeds the costs of the system.
The price cuts contrast with the government’s recent decision to sharply increase probate fees.
