BREAKING NEWS…
At the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham today, Theresa May, the Prime Minister, announced that mixed-sex or heterosexual couples will be able for the first time to enter into civil partnerships.
Civil partnerships which came into existence in 2004 were, previously, only available to couples of the same sex.
This announcement follows a defeat for the government in the Supreme Court earlier this year following a challenge to the existing law made by a couple, Rebecca Steinfeld and Charles Keidan who did not want to marry but who did want to mark their commitment to one another by becoming Civil Partners.
This is a very welcome development and will provide protection to those who live together but do not want to marry.
What it will not do is give any protection to the increasing number of couples who do live together but do not want to marry nor enter in to a Civil Partnership.
That anomaly still needs to be dealt with.

Now instead of forced marriage can we have a civil partnership lite where each partner can enter voluntarily into an agreement with their partner defining the financial limits of their partnership much as we have the CMS define the financial limits of a parents obligations to their children.
