You’ve made the difficult decision that the right thing to do is for you and your partner to get divorced… but how do you do this? When you reach out to Stowe Family Law, our team will be in your corner from the very beginning. To begin your divorce, you need to start the divorce application. You can do this solo or in a joint application with your ex.
We recognise just how difficult this time is, which is why we’ll guide you through the divorce process in a way you can understand. This way, you’ll feel comfortable and confident in the decisions you make – especially if children, finances, or property is involved.
You’ll be asked to ‘respond’ to a divorce when your ex-spouse has filed for a divorce. Responding simply means to confirm you have received the application and whether you either agree or disagree to the terms of the divorce. Having an expert lawyer by your side through this process can ensure you and your loved ones are in the best possible position for a successful outcome that secures your future.
In both England and Wales, there is a no-fault divorce system. Put simply, this means you don’t have to have a reason for your divorce. All you need to do is declare that your marriage has broken down.
While each divorce is unique in price due to the complexities involved, the court fee always stays the same at £612.
A child can choose which parent to live with once they turn 16. However, if there is a court order involved that declares where they should live, this increases to 18.
In a similar manner to how much a divorce costs, there is no set amount of time for how long a divorce takes. It all depends on the complexities involved and if there are any pushbacks.
Typically, a simple divorce will take between 6 and 8 months, but this all depends.
